Networks / TRES (Teaching Religion in a multicultural European Society) Networkwww.tres-network.eu
Most European societies are considered to be broadly secularized. Religion has therefore been approached by some decision-makers as being of only historical or individual importance. However, there has been a noticeable ‘return’ of religion during recent years as a powerful force with significant social and political effects. The teaching of religion, always of great importance in Europe and still compulsory in many educational systems, has therefore taken on a new relevance. However, it is facing many challenges, including significant differences between national educational systems, a lack of inter-religious understanding and the misrepresentation of European religious heritage by ‘fundamentalist’ groups. There is therefore a need for co-operation between academics working in the fields of theology and religious studies to develop common educational standards on teaching religion in multicultural European societies. This is the starting point for this thematic network. CEJI is a member of the network's Steering Committee, which is charged with examining, promoting and developing educational tools for the teaching of religion in a multicultural society, and is also involved in the working group on addressing religious conflict in society. CEJI's participation in the TRES network mutually reinforces several of our programmatic objectives. These objectives include the promotion of A CLASSROOM OF DIFFERENCE™ to teacher training programmes in universities throughout Europe; developing resources, expertise and expanding the CEJI network for the promotion of the new training module on religious diversity; and indirectly promoting and identifying resources for the Jewish-Muslim dialogue.
