Having worked together with the CoE for a number of years, both directly and through EPTO, CEJI is glad to see this formal recognition of the relationship that was built between the organisations. Participatory Status will allow CEJI to participate in the NGO conferences of the CoE, enabling us to advocate more effectively for programmes and policies in the fields of education, diversity and anti-discrimination, strengthening our programmes and advocacy work.Read the CEJI press release announcing the decision (PDF 105kb) ____________________________________________ OSCE Conference on Intolerance and Discrimination against MuslimsFollowing the OSCE conferences on antisemitism, the Chair-in-Office of the OSCE organised a Conference on Intolerance and Discrimination against Muslims on October 9 and 10 in Córdoba, Spain.CEJI’s Dialogue Co-ordinator, Ruth Friedman, attended the meeting, making CEJI the only Jewish NGO represented there. Bashy Quraishy, Chairperson of the European Platform for Jewish Muslim Co-operation was also present. Ruth’s address to the plenary can be found here (PDF 105kb). She also organised a side event introducing the Mapping Reports of Jewish Muslim Dialogue in 5 European Countries, which were also presented to the delegations of the countries covered in the reports. ____________________________________________ Extending the Reach of EU Equality LawsOn October 11 and 12, CEJI attended a meeting on extending the reach of the EU’s anti-discrimination legislation. The meeting was held at the European Parliament and organised by the European Commission, making this the first formal meeting on increasing the EU’s legal protections in this area.Luis Manuel Pínto, CEJI’s Educational Adviser, spoke at this meeting about his personal experiences of discrimination. Click here (PDF 39kb) to read the text of his speech. Background In the year 2000 the EU adopted two Equality Directives. The Employment Equality Directive (EC/2000/78) protects Europeans from discrimination in the workplace and during hiring, on the grounds of religion or belief, disability, age or sexual orientation. The Racial Equality Directive (EC/2000/43), while only covering racial and ethnic discrimination, provides protection in the fields of employment, education and access to goods, services and social security. Currently, a number of anti-racism and grass-roots organisations including CEJI is advocating for the extension of the protection provided by the Racial Equality Directive to other grounds of discrimination. This meeting, the first formal meeting on the issue, follows the consultation held by the Commission, which was mentioned in the previous CEJI Flash. We would like to thank those among you who contributed to this consultation! This is only the first step towards a more integrated approach to anti-discrimination law at the European level, and CEJI will keep up its advocacy work to achieve this step towards a continent free from bigotry. We will keep you up-to-date on future developments, and hope that we can count on your support in this. For details about how to support our work, please click here. Euro Med Training Course on Religious Diversity and Anti-Discrimination ____________________________________________ Staff NewsWe are pleased to welcome two new faces to the CEJI office!‘I have known EPTO since its beginning and I have been following the great things and interesting projects it has been involved in throughout Europe. EPTO has grown up a lot in terms of visibility, recognition, the number of people involved. It will be a very challenging task to keep high the energy, to improve the vitality of our network, to efficiently co-operate for a common goal: a better Europe with less discrimination and freer people!’
We also congratulate Luís Manuel Pinto on his new position as Educational Advisor for CEJI, to which he brings his valuable experience as the previous EPTO European Co-ordinator. We have also said goodbyes in the past month: Sandra Carmel worked with us for a year on the training module on Religious Diversity & Anti-Discrimination, and Vova Chornohal spent six months as EPTO Assistant. We wish them both the very best for the future. ____________________________________________ Upcoming Events
