Anti-Discrimination Training: Anti-Semitism and Islamophobia | Jewish Muslim Dialogue Training Workshop

A Jewish Muslim Dialogue Training Workshop on May 21st and 22nd saw the successful launch of the new anti-discrimination trainings on Antisemitism and Islamophobia, funded by the Anna Lindh Foundation. This training, targeted exclusively for Jewish and Muslim people, was extremely well received by participants from both communities. The training follows the format of CEJIs’ more general religious diversity training format , starting with an increased insight into oneself from one’s own and from the ‘other’s’ perspective. From here, participants increase their awareness of each other’s culture and faith and then to learn to examine and then confront issue of discrimination in the forms of antisemitism and islamophobia. This pilot training confirmed CEJI’s premise that members of the two faiths have much in common, can learn from each other and support each other in solidarity in the fight against both forms of discrimination.
At the end of this training participants shared their ideas for how they can be personally involved in the future and what they want to do in their own communities. Ideas included setting up joint Jewish Muslim football games, setting up Jewish Muslim Christian coffee mornings, and helping to set up and run future trainings in their communities.
Due to the high levels of interest generated by this training CEJI will be organizing the Anti-Discrimination Training on Antisemitism and Islamophobia again in the Autumn (Dates to be confirmed) for a general audience (including also non-Jewish and non –Muslim people).

Schools for the 21st Century: European Commission Consultation.

Late last year, the European Commission launched its first ever consultation on formal education, called “Schools for the 21st Century”. CEJI submitted its contribution, which you can read by clicking here. The Commission is planning to publish the contributions they received for this consultation, and will release a Communication on School Education in early July.
While Consultations and Communications are not generally very exciting, this particular one is an important step for the European Union: never before has the Union taken a position on formal education, which remains in the hands of the Member States. While, therefore, this Communication is not binding, the Union’s opinions matter, and can show where improvements should be made. The Communication will hopefully address the need for diversity education, with the aim of giving young Europeans the tools and competences to live on an ever-shrinking and increasingly diverse continent.

Update on the Durban Review Process

The Preparatory Committee for the Durban Review Process announced that the Durban Review Conference will be held in Geneva, from 20-24 April 2009. Holding the conference at a UN venue will allow for a safer environment for all participants, and enable the UN to better enforce its rules of conduct. During the last conference, in Durban in 2001, Jewish delegates were attacked and harassed, and both the NGO meeting and the international conference itself devolved into an antisemitic row.
While the contents of the upcoming meeting are not as yet confirmed, we hope that the venue will create a better working atmosphere, leading to actual steps to combat discrimination and racism around the world. Keep an eye on future CEJIFlash newsletters for more information.
